Creating Income Opportunities for the Rural Poor

IDE Ghana works with smallholder farm families in northern Ghana to help them increase their incomes and improve their food security.

IDE Ghana uses participatory processes to:

· Identify opportunities for rural farm households to increase their incomes through market participation.

· Understand constraints that limit people from participating in identified market opportunities.

· Develop and implement business plans that detail how rural households will increase their incomes by addressing constraints faced by farmers through linkages with businesses, services and markets.

 

Introduction of Irrigation

Most farmers in northern Ghana grow crops only during a short rainy season. Also, farmers increasingly experience erratic rainfall patterns. With the introduction of irrigation, farmers are able to grow high-value crops in the dry season, increase the area of land under cultivation, improve yields, and improve their ability to control water.
